History

The Village of McCook was named after John J. McCook, a late 19th century director of the Santa Fe Railroad and a former American Civil War officer. This coming of the railroads spurred development. Several quarries began operating in the 1880's attracting youthful Eastern European male laborers. The stone was shipped on the Illinois & Michigan Canal and later on the Sanitary & Ship Canal. In 1926, McCook incorporated as a village.

Mayor Jeffrey Tobolski and the Village Board have worked together to develop a close-knit community. Employee participation is encouraged and enjoyed at village events. The Administration Department is easily accessible to the residents.

The Police Department has progressed from the early days, when one officer patrolled the village on his own motorcycle. Today, the staff consists of a chief, a deputy chief, lieutenant, four sergeants, eleven officers and five dispatchers. - all receiving continuous training.

The McCook Fire Department operates with a full-time staff. The Department is trained in technical rescue, hazardous materials, fire and medical services. The village has purchased a state-of-the-art ambulance to help assist with medical needs.

The McCook Water Department provides water to the neighboring communities of La Grange, Riverside, Hodgkins, and Countryside (which then resupplies water to La Grange Highlands and Indian Head Park).

The Department of Public Works provides many outstanding services for the community. The streets and parkways are expertly maintained and complimentary grass cutting and snow removal programs to homeowners are benefits of living in McCook.

The MAX (McCook Athletic & Exposition Center) was recently purchased by the Village of McCook. At 125,000 square feet under roof, it contains a full-sized indoor football field covered in synthetic turf, two full-sized basketball courts, volley ball courts, and a baseball/softball academy. A new restaurant will be built to compliment community and public events, as well as concerts and social activities.

A new shopping complex is being planned, as is a hotel, restaurants, and industrial projects. McCook is a community that is welcoming the future.
