History

Incorporated in 1888, the area in and around Lyons was most likely visited by French explorer Louis Joliet and Jesuit Missionary Father Pierre Marquette as far back as 1673. These hardy soles were shown a short-cut that allowed them to move their canoes and supplies over land from the Illinois River to the Des Plaines River.

Today, Lyons is a community that values high-quality development and the redevelopment of existing underutilized land. Being located just twelve miles from Chicago, the quality-of-life of the residents of the 4,032 housing units and the merchants is always on the mind of Village leaders.

Lyons is an excellent location for all industrial, commercial and retail businesses. Three arterial roads (Harlem Avenue (Rt. 43), 1st Avenue (Rt. 171) and Ogden Avenue (Rt. 34) run through the Village, as well as a portion of historic Route 66 (Joliet Road). By utilizing the arterial roadways, businesses are able to access Interstates 55 and 290/88.

Lyons is very centrally located to Midway Airport (a ten-minute drive) or O'Hare (30 minutes away). Having a Village labor force of 67.4% ensures that all businesses will have a pool of highly dependable employees to choose from.

The much-anticipated, brand new municipal complex opened for community business on March 2009. The 43,500 sq. ft. structure houses a state-of-the-art Police Department and Communications Center, Village administration office, Village Council Chamber, Community Center, and Recreation and Health Department.

New businesses are constantly coming to Lyons. Others are changing their look or location. Most recently Lyons welcomed Dunkin Donuts, Starbucks, Jimmy Johns and Culvers. In 2010, a new McDonalds will open on First Avenue.

One of the dominant sites in Lyons is the Hofmann Tower; built in 1908 by George Hofmann Jr. The eight-story, castle-like concrete structure was the centerpiece of a large recreational area where visitors and residents enjoyed the simple pleasures of canoeing, powerboat rides, dancing, orchestral concerts, and a beer garden.

Lyons has kept that family-friendly attitude and constantly strengthens that spirit by bringing the community together for family events. Come and enjoy the many events that are held all year long.
