History

Built on a sense of pride and strong family values, the Village of Hodgkins offers small town Americana right here in the heart of the western suburbs. Hodgkins, incorporated in 1896, rests along the Illinois and Michigan National Heritage Corridor. Rich in untouched natural resources, historical sites and wildlife, the Corridor has been designated a national park by an Act of Congress.

Though small town home life is characteristic of the community, Hodgkins has always enjoyed an outstanding relationship with its business neighbors. The first business to locate in the community was the Kimball and Cobb Stone Company in 1883. The president of the company was Jefferson Hodgkins -hence the selection of "Hodgkins" as the name of the Village. In 1897 the business was sold to Vulcan Materials.

In 1985, the Village - along with McCook - created an Enterprise Zone. This was followed by the creation of a Tax Increment Financing District. These two economic development tools helped to create a positive climate for the location of many new business developments, that have included the Quarry Mall, the UPS Consolidation Hub, and the new Continental Motors dealership. These businesses have resulted in over 5,000 new jobs.
