History

Incorporated in 1960, the City of Countryside has enjoyed phenomenal growth and development in the past thirty-five years. Joseph Vial and his family were among the first families to settle in the area. Their farm was established in 1833, however development of the area remained slow. A few homesteads and vast areas of prairie land were the characteristics of the early Countryside area. In 1871 an event took place which helped Countryside and other western communities grow - the Chicago Fire - which sent people from Chicago out to the areas west. The early settlers of Countryside included the Conrads, the Henrys, the Murpheys, the Polks and the Winslows. Most came to the area by railroad. Land sold for $2.00 per acre. Historic Route 66 runs through the heart of the City and is now known as Joliet Road. In 1960 residents chose to incorporate as a city. The City's motto, "Business Oriented - Citizen Friendly", has supported the growth of a large commercial district, an industrial park, and attractive residential subdivisions and parks.
